Welcome to The Quiet Rich, your weekly guide to a quiet mind and rich life. Today, you’ll get the most interesting theory I’ve come up with in a while. I couldn’t wait to share this with you.
This is for anyone who has ever felt like they’re “behind” in life.
CONTEXT
When I came up with this idea the other week, it stopped me in my tracks. I call it The 8 AM Theory.
If your life were a 24-hour day, it’d only be 8 AM when you turn 30. Think about that. The first third of your life—every memory, every milestone—is only midnight to 8 AM.
8 AM is when most people are just getting started! They’re pouring the first cup of coffee. They’re deciding what kind of day they want to have. 8 AM isn't behind schedule. 8 AM is the beginning.
And yet, we live in a culture that tells you if you haven't "made it" by 30, you're late. If you're switching careers at 40, you're lost. If you're starting over at 50, you're brave (by which they mean foolish).
Thankfully, not one bit of that is true. Here’s why:
METHOD
Let’s assume you live a long, full life of 90 years. Here's how your life maps to that 24-hour day.
- Age 10 = 2:40 AM
- Age 20 = 5:20 AM
- Age 30 = 8:00 AM
- Age 40 = 10:40 AM
- Age 50 = 1:20 PM
- Age 60 = 4:00 PM
- Age 70 = 6:40 PM
- Age 80 = 9:20 PM
Find your age on that list. Sit with your time for a moment.
Let’s say you’re 55? You might occasionally catch yourself with this quiet feeling that you're “behind.” That the window is closing. That it might be too late.
But it’s only 2:40pm!
You’re just entering the loveliest part of the afternoon. The day is warm and wide open.
You still have so much time to learn the new skill, start the business, write the book, repair the relationship, find new love. You have so much time to become the person you’re meant to be.
CLOSING THOUGHTS
I've come to believe that different times of day are good for different things.
The early morning (age 0–20) is still nighttime. You're just a kid. The moon and stars are still out, and you’re filled with dreams.
The morning (20s–40s) is when you start building. You’re good at experimenting because the stakes are small. The more energy you pour in here, the easier the rest of your day becomes.
The afternoon (40s–60s) is for mastering. This is when everything you built in the morning starts to compound. Experience, relationships, perspective. Try not to rush this part. Enjoy it.
The evening (60s–90s) is for savoring. Slower, richer, more intentional. After the sun sets, it might get a little quieter, and that's okay. There's a wonderful kind of peace in the evening that the morning doesn't have. You spend it with the people you love, doing the things you love.
But right now? Most of you reading this are so early—somewhere between breakfast and dinner.
So ask yourself honestly: are you making the most of this time of day? Or are you still thinking about what you wish you’d done in the hours that already passed?
The morning person who spends their whole afternoon wishing they were back in bed misses the best part of the day. Don't be that person.
After all, you’re just getting started.
All my love,
Jade
