CONTEXT
A few years ago I sat next to someone at a dinner party who I still think about.
She wasn't the loudest or funniest person at the table. She didn't tell the best stories or even have the most impressive résumé. But by the end of the night, every single person wanted to stay in touch with her.
I spent the whole drive home trying to figure out what she'd done differently. Then it hit me. She was the most curious. It was so subtle that I barely noticed it, but she asked every single person amazing questions. As a result, we ended up telling her our best stories (and feeling seen).
It’s easy to think of charisma as a natural "aura," like it's something you're either born with or you're not. It isn't. It’s simply about leaving someone feeling good about themselves.
Here are 3 tiny ways to be people magnet, starting with your very next conversation:
THE METHOD
1. Lead with questions, not answers.
Most of us listen just long enough to form our response. Then we wait, politely, for our turn to talk.
The next time someone shares something with you, resist that. Ask two follow-up questions before you say a word about yourself.
This simple shift makes them feel truly heard.

2. Repeat back something they said.
I learned this one from a former hostage negotiator. (Yes, really.)
When someone tells you something that matters to them, reflect it back using their language, not yours. "So what I'm hearing is ___." Or: "I love that you mentioned ___."
This does two things: First, it proves you were actually listening. Second, it creates a moment where they feel truly understood.
And when people feel understood? They're way more likely to trust you and agree with the next thing you say.

3. Ask about something from last time.
Remember specific details from previous conversations. The trip they were excited about. Their new puppy's name. Their daughter's first week of kindergarten.
People gravitate toward those who make them feel remembered.
In a world where everyone is half-distracted, being remembered feels like a gift.
WHY IT WORKS
Maya Angelou said it best: "People will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel."
At the end of the day, everyone wants to feel heard, understood, and remembered.
